Development of the underground base of an urban block in the south of France

Egis teams are involved in a number of large-scale projects, such as those for Greater Paris, Greater Lyon’s Part-Dieu district and Brussels Capital.
What all these major development projects have in common is that they all have high ambitions in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and taking environmental constraints into account.

Challenge

The project consisted in redeveloping an industrial, logistics and intermodal hub on a constrained urban block.
The technical challenge was twofold: to integrate complex underground structures in a highly constrained urban area, and to ensure the safety and continuity of mobility flows for pedestrians, light vehicles and industrial vehicles…
The subsoil modelling carried out for this project was used to validate the site’s capacity to accommodate :
  • a district heating plant producing heating and cooling
  • a vertical waste treatment center
  • a waste collection center
  • an urban distribution center
  • a sewage sludge treatment network
  • a funicular railway station
  • a concrete plant and
  • parking.

Expertise

This extraordinary project required a project management team with a bespoke method and organization, mobilizing several areas of expertise

Architecture – Double organization of the base using multi-criteria architectural, functional and technical analyses.

Civil engineering – Integrating the towers into the base

Geotechnical engineering – Consideration of seismicity and interfaces with adjacent structures and supports

Hydrogeology – Foundations in the presence of groundwater and underground flows

Management of excavated material – Treatment of polluted soil and disposal of excavated material

Logistics – Flow and traffic management through dynamic simulation at access points and inside the base during construction and operation.

Safety – Integrated approach to safety (industrial, public, underground) adapted to the use of each component of the base.

Networks – Water, air, SSI and electricity supply to the various compartments.

BIM – Collaborative design on a BIM platform
