Egis has been operating one of Europe’s busiest freeways since 2009. This infrastructure is the subject of a major annual investment program to renew and improve the quality of service provided by this network.
A critical network
440 km long, it carries 15% of all UK motorway traffic and, on its busiest section, is used by over 250 000 vehicles a day.
A complex infrastructure
The operated network comprises: 5 tunnels, nearly 2,500 structures, including bridges, culverts and overhead gantries, and 1,400 other highway assets, including five strategic tunnels.
Egis succeeds in maintaining safe driving conditions thanks to its road maintenance supervision team and frequent inspections, and aspires to improve its operational processes for asset inventory, asset management, inventory management and inspection management.
Among the innovations introduced, the digital twin of the motorway network, accessible online on the platform of partner company Sensat, enables analysis of requests from construction and maintenance companies wishing to work on the network. Requests for intervention can now be processed from the office, using the 3D scenes provided by the point cloud, which limits processing times, avoids on-site travel, generates fuel savings and reduces exposure to the risk of accidents.
A single cloud for multiple applications
- Remote visits using high-detail virtual scenes
- Much easier to plan and prepare for future work or interventions
- Contextualization of 2D CAD design drawings by overlay with cloud data
- Measurements in the cloud to respond to external requests
- Verification and risk assessment of intervention plans supplied by maintenance companies
- Easy access to technical documentation via tags locating equipment in the cloud
Metrics showing widespread adoption
40 unique users on average per month
127 regular users from 20 different companies
450 different sessions per month
275,000 instructions carried out with point cloud support
